12 Years of Injustice: Free Alberto Patishtán!
The Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas Human Rights Centre, the El Bosque Movement for the Freedom of Alberto Patishtán, and Strategic Defence in Human Rights, in coordination with the relatives of Alberto Patishtán Gómez (henceforth Alberto Patishtán), announce the beginning of a new legal strategy that will solicit the Supreme Court Justice of the Nation (SCJN) to assume, as per its competency, the Motion of Recognition of Innocenceof the Tzotzil professor Alberto Patishtán.
With this new juridical action, the SCJN will have the unique opportunity to administer justice in the case of Alberto Patishtán—political prisoner for 12 years, who is currently being held in the Centro Estatal para la Reinserción Social de Sentenciados (StatePenitentiary) No. 5 in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.
For four months, since the beginning of the campaign for his release, thousands of organizations, collectives, communities, and individuals have stood in solidarity with the Tzotzil professor, hailing from over 30 countries from around the world. In this context, today, August 27, marks the beginning of the Fourth Phase of Worldwide Campaign of “Global Action to Bring Down the Prison Walls,” convened by the Movement for Justice in El Barrio, The Other Campaign New York, who in the following days will inform about international actions in support of Alberto Patishtán’s release.
In Chiapas, within this Worldwide Campaign, this Friday, August 31, a day of fasting and prayer will be held by numerous parishes of the Diocese of San Cristóbal de Las Casas. Following this, on September 4, the Pueblo Creyente (“Believing People”) has convened a pilgrimage from the Tzotzil area which will culminate in a celebration at the Cathedral of San Cristóbal de Las Casas.
Alberto Patishtán’s family, the community of El Bosque, and the endorsing organizations call upon national and international civil society, organizations, collectives, communities, and individuals to join the different initiatives to secure the release of Alberto Patishtán, beginning with sending letters to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Mexico (SCJN), so that this entity, as per its legal capacity, may administer the legal resource in favour of the Tzotzil professor.
We believe that it is of consummate importance to highlight the actions supporting the release of Alberto Patishtán, as this represents an opportunity to secure his freedom by way of the highest tribunal in Mexico.
