Excerpt from the EZLN communiqué read by Comandanta Hortensia

“20 years ago we had nothing, no health service or education that was for the people. No people could name their own authority if it was not recognized or controlled by the political parties. No people could dismiss its authority if it did not fulfil its duty and obligation, or when it became manipulative and corrupt, because it was backed by the official state and federal  governments, meaning that there was no level of authority which was truly serving the people .

But now our people have their autonomous government at the local, municipal, and zone level. Right or wrong has been done, but it is the decision and will of the people to choose their own authority and remove them from office when necessary.

Our people have begun to live and govern themselves with their own ways of thinking and understanding as our parents and grandparents did, that is, we have begun to live autonomy and freedom according to the Zapatistas.

This construction of our autonomy, the practice of democracy, freedom, equality and justice is moving onwards and no one can stop it.

Many of us are sharing our knowledge and experience with the new generations of children and young people and we are preparing our peoples to resist and rule. In our Zapatistas communities the bad government no longer commands, now the political parties do not control or manipulate, because 20 years ago we threw all the political parties away with the rubbish.

Now it is the people themselves who think, analyse and decide who will be their authority and how they want to be governed according to their own ways and autonomous laws.

There is still much to do, but we are sure that we will advance because (our struggle) is based on true democracy, freedom and justice.
